LLM Optimization Techniques: How to Get Cited by ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity

By Dheeraj Sharma · 2026-10-24 · 5 min read

A growing share of buyers now ask ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity or Google's AI Overviews before they click a single search result. If those assistants do not mention your business, you lose the shortlist before the search even starts.

LLM optimization (LLMO) — also called generative engine optimization (GEO) — is the work of making your website easy for these systems to find, read and cite.

A note on terms: "LLM optimization" also refers to making the models themselves faster, through quantization, pruning or caching. This article covers the marketing meaning — getting your content into AI answers.

How AI Assistants Choose What to Cite

Most AI answers that cite sources follow the same pattern. The assistant runs a web search, fetches a handful of pages, reads them, and writes an answer from what it found.

So three things decide whether you appear:

  1. Can the AI crawler reach your page?
  2. Is your page in the search index the assistant uses?
  3. Is your content easy to quote accurately?

Every technique below improves one of these three.

10 LLM Optimization Techniques That Work

1. Let the Right AI Crawlers In

Check your robots.txt. Many sites block AI bots by accident, through a security plugin or a CDN setting.

The main crawlers to know:

CompanyCrawlerPurpose
OpenAIOAI-SearchBotChatGPT search results
OpenAIGPTBotModel training
AnthropicClaude-SearchBot, ClaudeBotSearch and training
PerplexityPerplexityBotPerplexity answers
GoogleGoogle-Extended (token)Gemini training use only

You can allow the search crawlers and block the training crawlers. They are separate decisions. Google-Extended does not affect Google Search or AI Overviews — those use the normal Googlebot index.

Also check your firewall. Cloudflare and similar services can block AI crawlers by default, regardless of robots.txt.

2. Rank in Normal Search First

AI Overviews are built from Google's index. Other assistants lean on web search indexes as well, including Bing's.

Classic SEO is therefore the foundation of LLMO, not an alternative to it. Set up Bing Webmaster Tools alongside Google Search Console. Submit your sitemap to both.

3. Serve Real HTML, Not Just JavaScript

Many AI crawlers do not run JavaScript. If your content only appears after a React or Vue app loads, the crawler sees an empty page.

Use server-side rendering or static generation. Test with curl on any important page. If your main text is not in the raw HTML, fix that first.

4. Answer First, Then Explain

AI systems extract passages. A paragraph that answers the question in its first sentence is far easier to quote than one that builds up to the point.

Structure each section as a question-shaped heading, a direct one or two sentence answer, and then the detail.

5. Add Numbers, Sources and Quotations

Princeton-led research on generative engine optimization, presented at KDD 2024, tested this directly. Adding citations, quotations and statistics raised a page's visibility in AI answers by up to 40% in their benchmark.

Specific beats vague. "Delivery in 21 working days" is quotable. "Fast delivery" is not. Only publish numbers you can back up.

6. Keep Your Entity Consistent Everywhere

Assistants build a picture of your business from many sources. Your name, address, phone, services and founders should match on your website, Google Business Profile, LinkedIn, directories and press mentions.

Conflicting details make an AI less confident, and less likely to name you.

7. Use Structured Data

Schema markup — Organization, LocalBusiness, Article, Product, FAQPage — states facts in a machine-readable format.

Keep it truthful. Schema that claims reviews or ratings you cannot show is a risk in search and in AI answers.

8. Build Pages for Comparison Questions

Buyers ask assistants questions like "best ERP for a small manufacturer" or "WordPress vs Shopify". Pages that compare options honestly, with clear criteria and tables, get cited for these questions.

A page that only praises your own product rarely gets quoted.

9. Earn Mentions on Sites AI Already Trusts

Assistants cite sources they see repeatedly — industry publications, review platforms, forums, Wikipedia, and well-known directories.

A mention in a trusted industry article can do more for AI visibility than many low-quality backlinks.

10. Keep Content Fresh

Many AI answers favour recent content, especially for prices, tools and regulations. Update key pages, show a visible "last updated" date, and keep your sitemap lastmod values accurate.

What About llms.txt?

llms.txt is a proposed file that gives AI systems a clean summary of your site. It is cheap to add, and we publish one on byteflowtech.in.

Be clear about its status, though. It is a proposal, and the major AI companies have not confirmed that their search systems use it. Add it, but do not expect it to move results on its own.

Mistakes That Cost AI Visibility

  • Blocking every bot "for safety". A blanket block removes you from AI search along with training.
  • Writing for keywords instead of questions. Repeating a phrase ten times does not help a model quote you.
  • Hiding key facts in images or PDFs. Prices, service areas and timings belong in plain text.
  • Inventing numbers. An AI that repeats a false claim from your site can damage trust faster than silence.
  • Chasing every new tactic. Most gains still come from crawlable pages with clear, specific answers.

How to Measure LLM Optimization Progress

  • Referral traffic in GA4 from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com and copilot.microsoft.com
  • Manual prompt checks — ask the ten questions your buyers ask, monthly, and record who gets named
  • Server logs — confirm the AI crawlers are visiting and getting 200 responses
  • Branded search growth in Search Console, which often rises when assistants mention you

FAQ

Is LLM optimization different from SEO?

It builds on SEO. You still need crawlable pages and rankings. LLMO adds a focus on clear, quotable answers and consistent facts about your business.

How long does LLM optimization take to show results?

Search-based assistants can pick up changes within weeks, once pages are recrawled. Mentions from third-party sites take longer to build.

Should I block GPTBot?

That is a business decision. Blocking GPTBot keeps your content out of OpenAI's training data. It does not remove you from ChatGPT search, which uses OAI-SearchBot.

Wrapping Up

You do not need a new playbook to appear in AI answers. Start with crawler access, server-rendered HTML and answer-first content — those three fix most sites. Then work on entity consistency and third-party mentions.
